Hillcrest Mall

RICHMOND HILL, ON

CLIENT Oxford Properties

STATUS Completed in 2019

SCOPE Architecture, Interiors, Retail Amenities

The Bay Backfill together with the Target Backfill and Mall renovation projects are all part of a multi-phase renovation of Richmond Hill’s Hillcrest Mall just north of Hwy. No. 407 on Yonge Street. The Bay Backfill is anchored by Sporting Life and H & M and completely redefines the look and image of the centre. The Target Back-fill is anchored by Marshalls/Home Sense and Indigo completely redefine the look and image of the centre.  This area has been subdivided from one large tenant to multiple tenancies, includes new entrance and overall finishes upgrade to tie into the existing mall.

The upgrades includes refinishing ceiling treatments, column finishes, new floor tiles, retrofitting lights and expanding the food court's footprint and seating capacity from 277 to 500 seats.  The concept behind the renovation was to keep and enhance some of the original design elements while seamlessly tie into the new construction.   This was achieved by replacing original flooring with new porcelain tiles, painting existing ceiling, retrofitting lights with new LED fixture, all new general mall amenities and food court layout and furniture to enhance the atmosphere of the centre.

The overall furniture concept was driven from having the flexibility to change the layout and relocate furniture as needed.  To expand on Hillcrest Mall's sustainability efforts, we chose a neutral palette with a sage green accent colour in the upholstery, decorative bistro chairs in the food court and variety of planters throughout the centre.

Along with the architectural and interior upgrades, the mall curated a new retail design criteria for existing and upcoming retailers to attract young suburban families.  Customer feedback on the final look and feel has been very positive as the centre has transformed from an outdated mall into a bright and contemporary destination.
